Pervert’s golfing history to be erased

A picture of a disgraced golf club captain is to be removed from the club’s honour board.

The Chronicle revealed on Monday that a long-standing member of Saddleworth Golf Club had complained to officials about the picture of Timothy Edwards (56), jailed for six years for having sex with a 14-year-old girl he groomed online.

Edwards was club captain in 2012 and his name and picture were prominently displayed. The club will now remove them.

Businessman Andy Thornton from Friezland - a club member for 18 years - demanded Edwards’ picture be taken from over a doorway in the club’s main bar, where it was alongside other captains and presidents.

He was amazed the club committee was said to be debating whether or not to remove the picture.

Yesterday club general manager Alistair Griffiths said the club committee will remove Edwards’ name and picture.

Andy Thornton said he was pleased the club had made the decision and added: “I’d like to apologise for any upset I may have caused Mr Edwards’ family and friends - they cannot be held responsible for one man’s actions.”
