PC Nicola’s father an inspiration

A shadow minister in the last Parliament has praised the father of murdered Saddleworth PC Nicola Hughes for his “inspirational” work in her memory.

Dan Jarvis, former shadow youth justice and victims minister met Bryn Hughes, whose daughter was killed with fellow officer Fiona Bone three years ago.

The ex-paratrooper, currently Labour’s candidate for Barnsley Central, visited Oldham in support of local fellow candidate Debbie Abrahams.

The candidates talked with retired prison officer Mr Hughes (60), who heads the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, for 30 minutes.

Afterwards Dan said: “It’s always humbling to meet people who have suffered the sudden and unexpected loss of a loved one. People like Bryn, who then channel their energy into making sure something positive comes out of the situation, is a perfect example. By creating Nicola’s fund, other victims are helped to continue their education, supported financially if their personal circumstances have changed, and helped to find work. Bryn’s work is inspirational and invaluable.”

Mrs Abrahams said: “When I heard he was coming, I thought he would want to meet Bryn because of his role as justice and victims shadow minister and see what great work Bryn is doing with his memorial fund in Nicola’s name.”
