DELIGHTED families are settling into 23 new homes in Greenfield - after beating thousands of applicants for the New Charter Housing Group properties.

More than 3,100 people applied to live in the £2.5 million development on Mere Close. The homes are being let at affordable rents by New Charter’s Oldham-based housing association, Aksa Homes.

Each three-bedroom home received well over 100 bids with one home reaching 192 applications.

For Michelle Moore and her family, getting the news that they’d been accepted for one of the homes was “a dream come true”.

The 33 year old, who moved into one of the homes off Ainsworth Road with her husband and three children, said: “It is fantastic, we are so happy. We used to take the little ones to Dovestone and my husband David would say one day we’ll buy a house around here, but it never seemed possible.

“When we heard about the development we knew we had to apply and we were over the moon to hear that we’d got one of the houses.”

Councillor Dave Hibbert, Oldham Council’s cabinet member for housing, planning and transport, said: “The high number of applications shows more houses are needed, and that is why the council is committed to working with its partners to provide high-quality homes across the borough.”
