Community group is up and running

SADDLEWORTH’S busiest village plans to play a big part in uniting the area with the formation of a new association for residents and businesses.

More than 100 locals met to create an Uppermill Community Association — the last Saddleworth village without one. The meeting, at Uppermill Civic Hall, was spearheaded by parish councillors Pam Byrne and Graham Sheldon and supported by Nick Watts, from Uppermill Facebook group.

Councillor Sheldon, the village postmaster, said: “Uppermill is the busiest of all the villages in Saddleworth and comes with one or two problems. A lot of community groups are doing great work in their areas and we can do the same.

“Businesses and residents don’t always agree on things or look at things in the same way, so it will be good to have both in the group so we can talk about things.”

Residents have been invited to register their interest in being on the management committee, get involved with action groups such as street scene, or just become a member. Forms will be available around the village, including the Post Office. A meeting will be held on September 21 to elect a management committee
