All hands on deck as new group gets to work

A GROUP of volunteers are barging ahead with plans to keep Uppermill’s waterways on the right towpath.

Inspired by the success of award-winning environmental group Street Scene Greenfield, residents have formed Uppermill Community Association Network (UCAN) — part of the existing community association — and have been sprucing up a stretch of Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Since their first event back in October they have clocked up 100 hours of volunteering effort, tidying up litter and cutting back overgrown vegetation from the towpath.

Their efforts have the backing of the Canal and River Trust which is providing support and materials for the work.

“Initially it will be based around the canal, as the Canal and River Trust is keen for a local volunteer group to adopt the Uppermill length of the canal,” said UCAN’s Peter Killan.

“The work will be extended in the future to include the river and other areas where residents feel action is required. It is intended to hold project days on two mornings each month and volunteers will be welcome to take part as and when they are able.

“In addition to the usual litter and vegetation clearance we are planning a variety of tasks to keep us occupied and improve our surroundings.”

The group is also keen to be involved in the national “Clean for the Queen” over the weekend of March 4-6 to celebrate the monarch’s 90th birthday.
