‘Teletubbies’ eco-house plan splits opinion

Proposals for a unique “Teletubbies”-style eco-home dug into the countryside hills are set to go before Oldham Council’s planning committee tomorrow.

The “environmentally conscious” design would have a grassed roof to blend in with the hillside above Delph village - much like the house from toddler TV favourites the “Teletubbies” blends into the ground.

Council officers have recommended the planning committee approve the “innovative and exciting opportunity”. But Saddleworth Parish Council says it should be refused as an “inappropriate development within the Green Belt.” The plans have also attracted six letters of objection.

Catherine Bingley wants her “earth-sheltered home” to blend into the landscape so it can hardly be seen from the village.

The site — Delph Greave Barn, Lodge Lane — shares an access path with four farm cottages.

Catherine Bingley said: “My current house has fabulous views, is in a perfect position and shops and transport are just a stroll away, yet the peace and quiet is amazing. I feel privileged to live here and it would be fabulous to create a smaller, more ecological home in my garden without affecting any of my neighbours’ views.”

A report by planning officers suggests: “The proposed development achieves the very high standards of design to justify the special circumstances needed for the development to be acceptable in this Green Belt location.”

Retaining walls will be made from recycled tyres, sourced as locally as possible.

Objection letters talk of inappropriate development for the Green Belt, highway congestion, potential damage to an unadopted lane, unsympathetic design and disruption during building.
