A HAMLET’S item of treasured heritage has gone missing and is feared stolen.

The original King George VI red post box has vanished from its place in Bleak Hey Nook the main A62 Oldham-Huddersfield road near Delph.

Local sub-postmaster Suhki Singh said: “Everyone in the area is upset. These boxes are part of the rich tapestry of our villages and countryside. It really is a shame the box has vanished.”

Oldham and Saddleworth parish councillor, Nicola Kirkham said: “The theft is shocking. It’s a sad state of affairs when even postboxes aren’t safe.”

The nearest postboxes are now part way down Delph Lane, or outside the Post Office in Delph - more than a mile from the stolen box.
