DIVERS are searching a reservoir after a car left a country road and plunged into the water.

West Yorkshire Police said the driver is believed to have been the only person in the red car which entered the Booth Wood Reservoir, on the moors between Halifax and Rochdale, close to the M62 motorway.

Officers said the driver's family have been informed but searchers have yet to find the car, which was travelling west along the A672 Oldham Road, above Rishworth, close to the isolated Turnpike pub.

A spokesman said the incident happened at about 8.20pm yesterday.

A large-scale operation was launched including firefighters, paramedics and the police helicopter.

The road has been closed and specialist underwater search teams are due to enter the water today.

Sergeant Aaron Gudgeon said: "The road remains closed to allow specialist teams to conduct their inquiries and to recover the vehicle.

"Anyone who may have any information about the incident should contact 101."

Road closures are in place from Junction 22 of the M62 to Rishworth School.
