Credit where it’s due

Oldham based manufacturing business Patterson and Rothwell Ltd has benefited from a little-known tax credits scheme.

Management at the injection moulding and toolmaking business, which has sites at the Mount Pleasant industrial estate in Lees Road, Oldham, and Diggle, used research and development (R&D) tax relief specialists Jumpstart to secure credits for their development and innovation work.

Trevor Mills, the tool room manager at Paterson and Rothwell, was one of the team dealing directly with Jumpstart to secure the tax credits.

He said: “Jumpstart was recommended to Patterson and Rothwell. The whole process was really easy and when, on a day-to-day basis, you are busy planning and running a factory, working with someone who clearly knew what he was doing was excellent.

“We were very happy with the results that Jumpstart achieved for us.”

The benefits include increased cashflow, especially important to small, developing companies, and the development of a corporate philosophy that embraces innovation and improvement, and ultimately leads to the company bringing more products to market and makes it less susceptible to competition.

“Qualifying companies can typically look forward to recovering a tax credit within 18 months of talking to Jumpstart, although turnaround times are improving following the HMRC’s recent introduction of specialised regional centres devoted to the processing of R&D tax credit claims,” confirms Jon Wellings, from Royton, a business analyst with Jumpstart.

He added: “If everyone made use of the services of Jumpstart, then the UK economy with its long history of innovation, would be so much healthier. There is an estimated £980 million unclaimed out there and I urge all to follow us, and get what is, after all, rightfully theirs.

“It’s about economic impact and it is in our hands.”
