More cash, more clout to power the north
Date published: 03 July 2015
NORTHERN businesses want to see momentum behind the Northern Powerhouse agenda continue — but have demanded more power and cash from central Government.
An IPPR North survey across the country from Liverpool to Newcastle showed businesses back the Northern Powerhouse idea, but said the Government must be more radical on devolution of transport and infrastructure funding.
Last week the Government paused some northern rail upgrades, including electrification of the Leeds-Manchester line (which includes Greenfield station).
Firms also want further ‘fiscal devolution’, where business rates would be retained locally and northern regions rewarded by keeping the proceeds of growth. The Government is currently reviewing the rates system.
