ENGINEERING firm Delta International has received a top accolade at a steeplejack and specialist access services industry awards ceremony.

The Oldham firm specialises in engineering contracts for tall buildings and structures, ranging from skyscrapers and airports to power, processing, manufacturing and historical sites.

It received the Specialist Access accolade at the inaugural awards ceremony held by the Association of Technical Lightning and Access Specialists (ATLAS) in London.

Delta International was chosen as winner for its work on a 15-month demolition-and-replacement contract at a site operated by construction materials supplier Tarmac Lafarge near Buxton.

Judges praised Delta for its innovative and safe access techniques which allowed the processing plant to continue operating while the roof replacement was carried out.

Eleanor Hill, a Delta director, said: "We were thrilled to be recognised for the hard work we put into the Tarmac project. A lot of effort went into co-ordinating the work to ensure that there was limited impact to day-to-day operations. The whole crew showed excellent commitment to the project and this resulted in the completion of a quality job with no accidents during the 15 months that we were on site."

The ATLAS awards were attended by 180 guests at the Royal Horseguards Hotel with individual accolades presented to winners by Peter Shilton OBE.

Delta International has worked on buildings including London's O2 Arena, BT Tower and the former Battersea Power Station, along with Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Aberdeen Airport.

Another recent contract has been the design and fabrication of a self-supporting, climbing platform to demolish a chimney at the Sellafield nuclear processing plant in Cumbria.
