Blair rams home election message

Reporter: JANICE BARKER
Date online: 04 May 2010

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair dropped into Oldham today to chat to local businessmen and women ahead of Thursday’s general election.

The former Labour leader, looking tanned and smiling broadly, was whisked to the Ram’s Head at Denshaw for a breakfast meeting with 30 local business representatives.

Mr Blair, now the Middle East envoy for the US, Russia, the UN and the EU, stepped down in 2007 when his former Chancellor Gordon Brown became Prime Minister.

This morning’s meeting, which was hosted by Geoff Haigh, landlord of the Ram’s Head, on Ripponden Road, included representatives of leading businesses such as Wiggett Construction, Inclusive Technology, Dronsfield Mercedes, Oldham Athletic, Trust Oldham IT technology company, John Saxon construction, and Patterson and Rothwell.

Mr Blair, flanked by the Labour candidate for Oldham East and Saddleworth, Phil Woolas, spent an hour discussing business concerns such as lack of bank lending.

One excellent reason why not to vote Labour is this perma-tanned, hypocrite, multi-millionaire responsible for thousands of innocent Iraqi lives. Thank goodness Labour have trawled out this grinning warmonger to remind everybody what a despicable party this man once led. And the Ram's Head is one pub I'll never be visiting after seeing that photograph.

Message to PHIL WOOLAS, have you cleared your desk? because your out of a job friday. And as for JUDAS BLAIR paying oldham a visit, an hour in a pub on the hills sounds about right does that. DONT VISIT again your not welcome.

Well, there's one thing about coming away from the Ram's Head - it's downhill all the way. A bit like what is going to happen on Thursday!! And yes, I am another one who will not be furnishing the pub with my presence ever again!

This just proves how completely out of touch Labour are with the public - a significant portion of the populous despise the twisted, deceitful war-monger so why would dragging him back help?? Useless and out of touch. I certainly won't be voting Labour.

If you are anti-Iraq war, let's not forget before this election that the Conservatives supported it and would have done the same.

what bad publicity! for the pub really. i wont be going in their now considering who they'll let in.

and also the represenatives from certain business they let in too.

i wont mention any names. but most people will recognise them.

Mr Woolas was keen to tell us how much he had done for Oldham. 'Bringing home the bacon he said. Well Phil if you are so good, why have we had Brown Prescott and Blair within the borough boundaries to back your campaign?

Interesting how you are targetting the Muslim vote with your poster campaign. None to be seen anywhere apart from Clarksfield and Glodwick. Let's hope the Lib Dems rate the same as last time and your vote falls by 3,591.

What is even more interesting, Woolas has got a 8 page leaflet which accusses muslims to be targeting him!!!!

This guy is a hypocrite and decieving Oldhamers.

Yes, no matter who you vote for Labour was not alone in agreeing to go to war with Iraq. Don't forget what Thatcher did with the Belgrano. Short memories!

To those who won't visit the Rams Head 'cos Blair/Labour has been there I suggest you check out every pub/club/business/theatre/market/school/college and even toilets that anyone associated with Labour might have been seen in/visited and place them on your 'no go list'. What a statement to make. Oh, and check out all pub landlord's political affiliations before going - we don't want you feeling tarnished. So petty! Oh, and I am not a Labour Supporter.

owdhamfan the difference is that most pubs, clubs, businesses etc etc do not advertise the fact of what political support they give. they have more sence than to do that. i really do not care who the owner or landlord supports. its when they actively support them like this that its their choice to do so. but its their business they're jepordising.
its not petty at all. it would be different if it was criminals or far right partys that they showed support to.

You have a right to your opinion like I do (fedupoldhamer) but,as I was repeat, what silly comments. Would you never go to a hotel or conference centre that had staged a Party Conference? It may be that the landlord of the pub 'hosted'the event because it was booked by a third party and he was asked to play the role of host.It may well be that he is a Labour supporter. What does it matter? He's probably had more Tories in that pub than Labour supporters anyway. Why should business suffer?

Blair should be in prison for the supreme war crime, the crime of the planning and instigation of a war of agression, yet the media fawn all over him.

"Don't forget what Thatcher did with the Belgrano." Yup, thats exactly like invading a country based on demonstrable lies in which 1 million people have died, toxic chemicals are causing birth defects (Fallujah) and four million are displace refugees, Exactly the same right? Fool.

Tony Blair it said on the news paying a suprise visit to Oldham, could it be Limeside, Bardsley.no it's Saddleworth not exactly your average Oldham housing estate it is, if your care about how Labour treats it voters Mr Blair, come down and visit us who live in the less solubrious areas of Oldham normal working class people who work hard, my father has give over 60 years of his life to the labour party and as a labour councillor and encouraged me to do the same but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,LIB DEM NOW.

Owdhamfan, you need to learn your history. Iraq/Afghanistan are not wars. War has not been declared against another state. We are lapdogs to America. War had been declared against Argentina. We were at war when the Belgrano was sunk. Had it not been sunk it would have been used to attack British forces. No different to Churchill ordering the destruction of the French fleet in WW2 to stop the Nazis using it against us. Remeber Woolas voted strongly against an investigation into Iraq.

I simply stated that an attack on the retreating Belgrano was wrong. You may think you know your history BUT you can't read. By the way as someone who has generations of family having served in the armed forces - including the present - and including fighting the Japanese, Germans, Afghans, and Iraqis I think I know what 'History is'. Seems all you can do is make personal attacks when someone begs to offer an opinion different to you.
