Mystery surrounded the UKIP candidate in Oldham West and Royton.
Helen Roberts from West Wirral didn’t appear on the platform with other candidates when the result was declared at 5.55am by Acting Returning Officer Charlie Parker.
Liberal Democrat candidate Mark Alcock said: “She has never been to any of the hustings — in fact I have never seen her.”

I did wonder at her commitment to a constituency some 50 miles from her home. Seems I was right to do so.
