Shock defeat for Lib-Dems

A DEVASTATING blow was served to the Liberal Democrats when former cabinet member for regeneration Mohib Uddin failed to win his seat by 578 votes.

The shock defeat saw the long-standing councillor get 2,100 votes but ultimately lose out to Labour candidate Abdul Malik who polled 2,678 in the Coldhurst ward.

The 36-year-old, a councillor for the past 10 years, said: “It’s a shock defeat but I’ve had a good 10 years.

“It will give me a break, a chance to take stock and spend time with my family.

“I’ve enjoyed being on the council, have helped a lot of people and I want to thank the people of Oldham.”

Mr Uddin admitted that the Liberal Democrats as a party had expected to do better in the elections and the results were not as favourable as hoped, but he said there were no excuses.

He added: “The facts are the facts. Sometimes in politics you can’t fight the tide.”

And despite his defeat, he failed to rule out a return to local politics at the next local elections.

He said: “Never say never — politics is in my blood.”
