A BUSY road will be closed for 'at least a week' after it was damaged following a major water main bursting.
The burst sent a flood of water flowing along Manchester Road in Greenfield, Saddleworth, at 10.40am on Friday morning.
Police were forced to close the road, which links Mossley and Oldham with Holmfirth, as the water amassed leaving some parts completely submerged.
United Utilities engineers arrived at the site and assessed the extent of the damage as the flow was stopped.
However the amount of water did severe damage to the road and engineers had to work throughout the weekend to fix the water main.
On Twitter GMP Saddleworth said: "Road repairs on Manchester Road, Greenfield will take at least a week to complete.
"Diversions have been put in place."
Closures are in force at the junction of Oakfield Road and Manchester Road and at the junction of Huddersfield Road and Manchester Road.
Motorists have been advised by police to find alternatives routes.
United Utilities apologised for any inconvenience caused.
The company said: "Due to the complex nature of the repair to the burst water main on Manchester Road/Dacres Road, work will be ongoing throughout the course of the weekend.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
