Nursery wins £500 to rebuild its playground

A NURSERY is looking forward to resurrecting an outdoor play area after vandals repeatedly trashed the site.

Holyrood Day Nursery, Shaw, won a £500 grant as part of the Sudocrem Play More campaign to upgrade their equipment.

The nursery was one of ten to scoop the cash after being nominated by a parent.

A spate of attacks, which began last summer and continued up until March, saw a summer house burned out, windows smashed, fencing torn down, a pram shed broken in to and glass strewn across the climbing equipment.

To combat the relentless vandals, the nursery increased security measures and police stepped up patrols to act as a deterrent.

After hearing of their difficulty, Sudocrem decided the money could help rectify the damage and the nursery is now discussing with parents to see what equipment they should purchase.

Donna Tylor, senior nursery nurse at Holyrood, said: "It is a relief to be given the money. The vandals trashed it every weekend. It went on for quite a while.

"It made it really difficult because we had to segregate the garden for long periods because we either had the maintenance team or a skip in there and after that fire we had to get rid of a lot of the equipment.

"It is just disgusting that they targeted somewhere like this. The police got involved and it stopped but we lost a lot of our equipment."

Nursery manager Cath Lavin was delighted with the grant.

She said: "This award will allow us to replace some of the equipment we lost and purchase some extra outdoor equipment to provide a bit more variation."

Nick Lang, Sudocrem's brand manager, said: "Children love playing outside and it's fantastic to see so many nurseries like Holyrood doing all they can to improve their outdoor play areas.

"Being outside brings children closer to nature. It builds physical confidence and helps them form friendships."
