A MAN has been charged with the murder in Middleton of dad Michael Hoolickin.
Timothy Deakin (21), of Lever Street, Heywood, is in police custody and due to appear at Bolton Magistrates Court today.
Michael's father Gary Hoolickin, a centre half, made 228 appearances for Oldham Athletic between 1975 and 1989.
The football club has sent its condolences to the family. A spokesman said: "The incident has come as a massive shock to everyone here at Oldham Athletic and our thoughts go out to Gary's family and all their friends."
Michael (27), from Middleton, was found with stab wounds after police were called to a disturbance outside the Friendship Inn on Cheapside last Friday night. He was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary, but sadly passed away from his injuries on Monday.
One of four brothers, Michael leaves behind his four-year-old son, Ellis.
An appeal to give Michael "the send-off he truly deserves" has been set up by friends on the JustGiving website and currently stands just short of £9,000.
A teenager has also been charged in relation to the case. Jorge Richardson (18), of Harwood Gardens, Heywood, is due to appear at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester in November on a single charge of assisting an offender.
