AN OLDHAM pensioner was violently attacked in his own home by a thief pretending to be from the council.

Police are appealing for information after the robbery in Barons Court, Failsworth, at 6.50pm on Sunday, October 16.

The 71-year-old victim had answered the door to a man who claimed to be from the council and carrying out security checks.

As the victim attempted to close the door, the offender forced his way inside and grabbed him by the throat, pushed him to the floor, and kicked him in the back and ribs.

The offender then pulled the victim to his feet, dragged him into the living room and forced him on to the sofa.

He then put his hands around the victim's neck and demanded money and jewellery, before he took an amount of cash from the his wallet and left.

The man was treated by paramedics at the scene after feeling pain to a rib and his side.

The offender was described as white, around 30 years old, with short, dark hair and stubble.

He was wearing blue jeans and a high visibility yellow jacket, with the number "22" on the shoulder area and the letter "O" on the back under the hood.

Det Sgt Jason Byrne, of GMP's Oldham borough, said: "This was a prolonged attack which left the victim fearing for his life.

"After having the audacity to claim that he worked for a local authority, the offender then forced his way inside and brutally assaulted a vulnerable person in the very place where he should feel most safe.

"I urge anyone who knows anything which they feel could help with our investigation to get in touch.

"In addition, I would encourage residents in the neighbourhood to be vigilant and be alert to any suspicious activity in the area."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 and quote the reference number 2070 of 16/10/16, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
