THIS driver took hands-free to a whole new meaning.

Chronicle reader David Mowbray was driving on Broadway, Chadderton, at around 3pm on Monday when he noticed the car in front of him being driven "erratically".

After pulling alongside he saw that the woman, in a black Nissan Qashqai, had tucked the mobile phone into her scarf so she could use it.

The passenger who was with David then took a picture of her flouting the law before she drove off on to the M60.

David said: "There was a car in front of me and it was swerving all over.

"My initial thoughts were that it was a drunk driver.

"I pulled up at the side and noticed the phone was being held to her ear by her scarf. She had been all over the road. It was startling.

"The phone kept slipping down and she was pushing it back up. She wasn't in full control of the vehicle.

"I put the window down and said to her, 'get off the phone', but she just drove off on to the motorway."

It is illegal to drive while using hand-held phones or similar devices.

Flouting the law can lead to three penalty points on your licence and a fine of £100.

Under new rules due next year, drivers will get six points on their licence and face a £200 fine.
