A MAN has died after he was struck by a train near Greenfield station.

Emergency services were called to Moorgate Halt crossing, in Uppermill, near the Saddleworth viaduct, just after 12.10pm yesterday.

The man was found dead at the foot crossing on the approach to the station when the British Transport Police and ambulance service arrived.

An investigation has been launched but the BTP said the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

A BTP spokeswoman said: "Officers were still at the scene at 2.30pm.

"We are investigating the circumstances so we do not yet know how the man came to be struck by the train."

Northern and First Transpennine Express train services were cancelled while emergency services attended.

Passengers experienced delays of around 30 minutes and bus replacement services were put in place between Stalybridge and Huddersfield.

A Northern spokeswoman said: "There has been a disruption and we have been running buses.

"The line was reopened just before 2pm."

Greater Manchester Coroner's office will carry out the formal identification of the man, whose age is currently unknown.
