A SMOKE alarm alerted a family to a fire in the loft.
Firefighters were called to Cranbrook Street, Oldham, shortly after midnight on Saturday, when a mattress had caught on fire in the storage area of the loft.
It had been laid against a lightbulb which was still warm, setting the mattress alight, which prompted the smoke alarm to go off. The family of six, which included a newborn baby, were able to evacuate safely.
Everything inside the storage room was destroyed but fortunately the fire was contained to one room.
