ANIMAL rescue staff say there are trying to come to terms with the worst case of neglect they have seen.

Pennine Pen Animal Rescue were called out by a member of the public to what was described as "a dog dying in the street" on nearby Kenyon Avenue, in Hathershaw, on Tuesday morning.

When staff arrived, the poorly pet - thought to have been dumped by his heartless owner - was in serious condition and had collapsed on the road.

Infected

Manager Michael Waugh said apart from being extremely emaciated, the poor pooch's skin is severely infected and they're just praying "Kenny" - as staff have named him - pulls through in the next few days.

"This is the worst case of neglect I have ever seen since I set up the centre 15 years ago," said a distraught Michael.

"It's absolutely shocking. The vet at Tameside Veterinary Clinic said it's the worst he's seen in 20 years of practice."

"He is underweight and when we arrived he was trying to stand up but just didn't have the strength.

"His skin is in an horrendous condition and has secondary infections. He's on antibiotics and we're waiting for the results to find more. We're just praying he'll pull through."

Kind-hearted staff at Pennine Pen have rallied to help Kenny - thought to be under two years old - who is being kept comfortable, warm and fed little and often to slowly build up his strength.

Michael says Kenny was in such a bad condition it's hard to say what breed he is but they believe he is a type of mastiff.

Pennine Pen is now appealing for help to find and prosecute the person responsible for Kenny's misery. "I just don't know how someone can stand to let their dog get to this point," he said.
