CHANCE . . . Billy Mckay
SHREWSBURY 1, ATHLETIC 0
FREDDIE Ladapo scored against his old club as John Sheridan's side suffered a major blow in their battle against the drop.
After having a first-half effort disallowed for an apparent handball, the on-loan Crystal Palace striker capitalised in the 69th minute on a corner that was not cleared, heading over bodies in the box and beyond Connor Ripley for his second goal in as many games.
Billy Mckay had fired wide from a good position only eight minutes earlier, after substitute Aaron Amadi-Holloway had nodded towards him. The ball arrived at an awkward height but the attempted overhead kick saw the ball travel a foot wide.
Athletic lacked for cohesion in midfield in a tight contest. The hosts had the better of the first half, seeing Ladapo have his effort chalked off on the advice on a referee's assistant, while after the break Sheridan's men struggled to break down hosts who had only conceded one goal in seven previous outings at Greenhous Meadow, with no saves forced out of goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler.
