OLDHAMERS have been urged to "pull together' to beat cancer in a unique fundraising challenge.

Cancer Research UK called on residents across the North West to take part in The Great Row - an indoor rowing challenge - to help beat cancer.

Rowers cover their chosen distance on an indoor rowing machine during Challenge Week, one week before the renowned Boat Races take place on Sunday, April 2.

Amateur and professional rowers alike can take part individually or in a team, choosing their preferred distance from 2,000 metres up to a full marathon.

Olympic rowing champion Helen Glover, who is supporting The Great Row, said: "Having a fresh challenge to kick off the New Year is a great way to get health and fitness goals back on track, or inspire those who want to take on the gym for the first time.

"The Great Row is flexible and includes a challenge to suit every level, whether you've never used a rowing machine before or you think you might win an Olympic medal one day.

"On top of being a fantastic fitness motivator, it's a good way to support Cancer Research UK's work.

"Last year was a huge success and it would be brilliant to see even more people get into rowing and doing their bit to beat cancer."

Around 110 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West every single day.

Funds raised through this rowing challenge will go towards helping residents in the North West and across the UK to survive the devastating disease.

Last year Cancer Research UK spent £23million in the North West for scientific and clinical research, thanks to generous supporters.

North West spokeswoman Alison Barbuti said: "Cancer does not discriminate - almost everyone will have either experienced cancer themselves or know someone who has been affected."

"That's why we need as many people as possible to pull together and beat cancer by signing up for The Great Row."
