A TOWN centre footbridge has officially reopened after four-month refurbishment project.

The Union Street West footbridge, which runs over Oldham Way, was closed on October 3 for Oldham Council to carry out the second stage renovation work to improve its appearance.

Key improvements include a new stainless steel parapet, a new handrail with LED lighting system and the introduction of decorative Oldham Crests on either side of the bridge.

Councillor Fida Hussain, Cabinet member for environmental services, said: "These works are very important to us. Union Street West footbridge is popular with pedestrians and cyclists.

"Improvement works to the bridge were very much needed. It's a key route for people accessing the town centre."

The council is now looking into a third and final phase of the improvement works - with a date yet to be confirmed.

The next stage of works will include replacing the existing paving with a new high grade surface material. The bridge deck will also receive a deep clean and re-waterproofing, which will prolong the lifespan of the bridge for a further 25 years.
