A JUBILANT Jean Stretton was celebrating a "fantastic night" for Labour in Oldham.

Councillor Stretton, leader of Oldham Council, thanked everyone who had canvassed in both Oldham East and West constituencies and thanked the voters for turning out to re-elect their two Labour MPs.

She said: "This has been a really fantastic night for Labour in Oldham. Both of our MPs returned with increased majorities and our by-election in Royton North went to Clint Phythian, so three out of three for Labour in Oldham tonight. I'm really, really grateful to the public of Oldham for placing their trust in us once again and really grateful to the people who went out and worked hard to make this election result possible. We've been keeping an eye on the national picture.

"Clearly Theresa May called this election because she thought she would strengthen her majority but that has not happened. The next few days will tell us what the outcome of that is for her but the important thing for Oldham is we have returned two fantastic Labour MPs who will do their very best for the people of Oldham who have chosen them to represent them, and we have also returned a fantastic new Labour councillor in Royton North, who will do the same."
