Order restored on Shaw siege street

A MUM-OF-TWO held hostage at gunpoint by her partner escaped injury, police have said as they continue to question the gunman.

Officers say 27-year-old Lisa Hurley was rescued without any obvious injuries, but has since been taken to hospital for assessment.

Gunman Marc Schofield (30), from Hyde, was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and false imprisonment and remains in custody.

The stand-off at Pemberton Way, Shaw, ended at 4.50am yesterday after 25 hours when armed police entered the property.

In the initial hours of the incident two young boys, aged one and six, were released from the property. The one-year-old sustained a large cut to the back of his head which required treatment but is not believed to be serious.

There remains a police presence in the area as the street returns to normality. Anybody with concerns is encouraged to approach them.

Fears

Officers had attended the address in the hours prior to the hostage situation after reports of a separate incident which was resolved when Schofield left the property.

However, he then returned and took the mum and her two children hostage.

Given the previous police contact, GMP's Professional Standards Branch has been informed.

More than 40 residents living in neighbouring homes had been evacuated amid fears of a possible gas explosion, with firefighters and National Grid engineers scrambled to the scene.

Chief Supt Neil Evan said: "Thankfully this incident was safely resolved.

"Our priority throughout the operation was public safety and to minimise any risk of serious injury to residents, we felt it necessary to ask the National Grid to cut off the gas supply to a number of nearby properties.

"This was done purely as a precaution and the National Grid is now in the process of returning homes to normality."
