THE white rose was a common sight across Uppermill as proud locals celebrated their Yorkshire heritage.

There was a host of activities for locals as they ventured out on Sunday to celebrate Yorkshire Day.

The Mayor of Oldham, Shadab Qumer, Katrina Roman, chairman's lady and parish council chairman Nikki Kirkham followed behind the Delph band who led a parade through Uppermill village.

Bob Rodgers read the Yorkshire declaration of integrity and the statue of poet and historian, Ammon Wrigley, was adorned with a reef of white roses - prior to that he had been serenaded by the Delph band.

Small business and charity stalls were erected in Uppermill Park as well as numerous activities for children, including a fair ground carousel.

While there were a few short showers it did little to dampen the spirits of the revellers who enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

Councillor Nikki Kirkham said: "It was great, it was very very good and the weather sort of stayed off, but it was lovely. The organisers did a great job, it was very interesting and everybody came and there was a good turn out."

She said: "The organisers did a really good job it is a lot of hard work, it was a long day but it was a nice day."

Councillor Kirkham went on to say that the day showed a real community spirit across Saddleworth.

"All of Saddleworth pull together when there is something going on. We do have a lot of community spirit in Saddleworth, we all get stuck in," she said.

The day was also something that Cllr Kirkham hoped would be passed down to and carried on by future generations.

She said: "The people that do it can't do it forever, the people work so hard. It needs to be passed on."

"The day was absolutely fantastic, I had a really good time.

"To be a part of it was an honour and a privilege and I felt very proud walking behind Delph band."
