HIGHLY effective teaching, exciting lessons, harmonious attitudes . . . Thorp Primary is nothing short of outstanding.
Ofsted inspectors said the Royton school gives first rate value for money, effectively promotes high standards and achievements, makes good use of resources and demonstrates the ability to improve even further.
Attainment throughout the school is well above the national average thanks to the standard of teaching teamed with an exciting curriculum that can be adapted to help pupils become better learners.
Inspectors found lessons to be challenging and engaging in a way that encouraged children to think for themselves and participate with confidence.
Attendance is also above the national average which inspectors believe is down to pupils’ sheer enjoyment of school life and their well nurtured, outstanding personal development and well-being.
Children feel safe in school and take pride in their roles as healthy eating representatives and as members of the school eco committee.
Their committee has helped the school to achieve Eco School Green Flag status and has empowered them to make improvements to the school grounds with the construction of a nature garden.
Children have lots of opportunities to take part in extra curricular activities and have great respect for other cultures and religions.
Head teacher Peter Royle was recognised for his excellent leadership skills and promotion of teamwork within a supportive network of teachers, staff, governors and parents.
To further boost standards, inspectors recommended that the school should work to increase the rate of progress made by the lowest attaining pupils.
Mr Royle said: “All concerned with Thorp Primary, children, staff, governors and parents feel proud and delighted at our inspection outcome.
“To be judged as an outstanding school reflects the hard work and commitment that make the standards of Thorp as high as they are, in terms of both attainment and achievement.
“I personally am thrilled and give my thanks and congratulations to all concerned.”
Janet Doherty, Oldham Council’s service director for learning development and localities, added: “Congratulations to the staff and pupils on their fantastic success and a special mention to Peter Royle who has shown total dedication in his role as head teacher.”
