Local shops for local people

Date published: 14 January 2009

OLDHAM Council has stepped up its campaign to get people shopping in Shaw by mailing leaflets to more than 9,000 people.

They give information on Shaw, reasons to shop local and a useful map of the town centre.

It follows the launch of the Think Local … Shop Shaw campaign before Christmas to raise awareness of the value of shopping locally in Shaw and Crompton.

A reusable Shaw bag has already been introduced at a range of retailers in the town and improvements made to the town centre.

Oldham Council leader Councillor Howard Sykes, a Shaw parish councillor, said: “Local shops have a great deal to offer people in terms of convenience and personal service.

“A successful Shaw is good news for everyone and the council is committed to supporting local traders wherever possible.

“Shopping locally can also cut down on food miles and excess packaging that can be an issue with supermarkets. So shopping local is also a greener alternative.”

The leaflet will also be available to pick up from local shops and services. For more information on the campaign visit www.oldham.gov.uk/thinklocal

Maybe they should have thought about this before allowing Asda to open there. Small retailers can't compete with supermarkets.

I live & do most of my shopping in Shaw. It is an excellent centre when compared with Oldham itself, Saddleworth etc. But I would take this campaign more seriously if OMBC consulted local residents rather than their cronies & started to plan a re-furb of Market Street & the market ground itself. Currently it overlooks the most awful 'slums' in Market Street & gives a terrible impression.
