Fury over three ‘dazzling’ signs for new pub
Reporter: KEN BENNETT

AN angry councillor accused a brewery of dazzling motorists with signs — even before its new pub is open.
Richard Knowles, Saddleworth South councillor, claims signs outside The Kingfisher pub-restaurant on Chew Valley Road, Greenfield, are a road hazard and have been put up without consent.
Councillor Knowles said: “The three signs are a blatant breach of regulations.
“Residents are really angry that Marston Taverns has erected garish signs outside the new Kingfisher pub.
“The three illuminated signs are also a major road safety hazard after dark — the neon lights dazzle motorists on Chew Valley Road.
“I reported these illegal signs to Oldham council’s planning department before Christmas — and so have several residents living near the site.
“I have been told Marstons is now being warned that it is an offence to display unauthorised signs and has been advised to remove them within seven days.
“Failure will result in the council taking legal action.
“It is long overdue that the council is seen to clamp down hard on developers breaking planning and advertising rules.
“Oldham seems to have acquired a reputation that developers can get away with whatever they want and this must stop.”
An Oldham council planning spokesman said: “The three, free-standing signs don’t have express advertising consent.
“The brewery has submitted an application retrospectively. This will be dealt with in the normal way.”
A Marstons spokesman said: “We have submitted a new application for The Kingfisher signage after the advertisement was slightly revised.”
Comments
Oh here we go again, Knowles moaning about something that doesn't really matter. He should be trying to speed-up the building of Tesco (instead of welcoming obstacles) and getting this miserable gloomy mill area back into something respectable. Seen from a train, that area of Greenfield has for a long time looked like a slum. Well done Marstons for bringing a bit of colour into the murk.
i take it you two arent saddleworth residents or havent been living there long.
saddleworth is a reasonabley untouched place and with oldham council constantly allowing more and more monstrositys like this to be developed it'll all be a mess like the rest of oldham is
Sorry to disappoint you 'fedupoldhamer' I do live in Saddleworth and have done for over 27 years (prior to that I had a life elsewhere). Saddleworth is not a 'reasonably untouched place' at all. It is a collection of old mills, industries and houses of varying age, quality and standards. Most of its beauty is in the surrounding countryside. The area in question in Greenfield has been a disgusting eyesore and a mess for may years and we should be grateful that developers are improving it.
well road rocket you still seem to be an outsider.
years of OMBC meddling have created mish mash!
only when there's money involved do these sorts of developments get passed!
and yet we pay the highest council taxes in the country and get nowt back in return! we're even last on the list for the gritter wagons when it snows!
Have Your Say

Once again the Saddleworth 'snobbery' persists. In my opinion, these signs will brighten up such a grim and dull looking area and I dare say many will agree with me.
