Store has a growing impact

Date published: 24/03/2009

The changing face of Hill Stores, and the expanding Tesco store, are captured in these shots taken from the top of the 12-storey Littlemoor House tower block.

The former Co-op buildings at Hill Stores have, apart from the stonework getting dirtier, changed very little in the 15 years between these pictures being taken. But contrast the size of the Tesco store in the pictures — the one on the left was taken in 1994 and the other only a few days ago.

Once a single-storey supermarket, Tesco has become a bright white landmark in Huddersfield Road with the building work on a new 70,000 sq ft store. It is expected to open this year, and Tesco says it should secure 750 jobs. The £35 million improvement plan includes the new store, built on supports to provide car parking beneath, and new small shops along the Huddersfield Road frontage.

Existing shops next to Tesco will be refurbished, and the new store will stock clothing and electricals as well as food and drink. The old building was closed and demolished in 2007.

I agree with fedupoldhamer. I dread to see the impact of their traffic on Greeancres Rd, especially at school times, but also on Huddersfield Road that gets congested even now.But as long as Tesco makes more profit, who cares ?

I liked the old Tesco, it was just the right size to be able to get everything needed without spending an age looking at things I don't need from what I understand most customers expressed this but Tesco didn't listen. I wonder if they will have enough extra business to justify £35M investment

I also liked the old Tesco, but for different reasons. Their customer service was generally good. They employed older women who knew how to pack bags, and did not chatter incessantly with the colleague on the next till point. Time will tell what the new store will bring.

tesco's use the regeneration excuse to fool councils into letting them build their monstrosities.
just look at failsworth. saddleworths next on their agenda! its going to be another hideous white box.
why doesnt oldham council have some guts and force them to build a sympathetic structure. like the co-op in lees.

also might i suggest removing the bus lanes now along huddersfield road. with all the extra traffic its going to be chaos around there. its already bad and the stores not even open yet.
