Old rail bridge to disappear

Date published: 22/04/2009

This Victorian rail bridge has had its day and will be filled in so the bend can be smoothed out.

It crosses Honeywell Lane near Kings Road, Oldham.

It used to allow trains from the curved goods warehouse near the Alexandra Retail Centre off Park Road to travel from Oldham towards Park Bridge along the Ashton and Gude Bridge Railway line.

But the line has been closed for decades and a structural survey has found that the bridge is substandard.

The road will be realigned and widened to include a cycle lane under a contract worth almost £100,000, which will be carried out by Eric Wright Construction.

Typical OMBC - if it's old, knock it down or let it rot!

When I was at school, we were told that Mumps Bridge was distinguished as it was the longest of its type in the world. Now they intend to knock that down as well, despite its being a well-known 'gateway' at a tatty & horrendous end of town.

Where will it all end?

Oldhamer, the morons in the Tower of Babble won't rest until they've destroyed everything we used to value in the town. They are a primitive brainless form of fungus, slowly eating away at the fabric of our society. They wallow in their golden troughs, nurtured by regular applications of 'allowances', wasting our TAXES & issuing edicts on all manner of things of which they are ignorant. What we need are leaders with vision & enterprise. Come on Oldham, cleanse the sty, before it is too late.
