Sing a song for England

Reporter: JANICE BARKER
Date online: 23 April 2009

Saddleworth Male Voice Choir is urging anyone who’s English and proud to attend its annual St George’s Day concert on Saturday.

Uppermill Civic Hall will be a riot of red and white as the choir sings pieces from its repertoire with a particularly English flavour. There will even be a rousing finale giving the audience the chance to join in a flag-waving sing-along to “Land of Hope and Glory”, “There’ll always be an England” and “Jerusalem”.

The choir’s special guests this year are the former Saddleworth-based Dave Donohoe Jazz Band. Trombonist Dave Donohoe leads one of the best New Orleans-style bands in the country and was hand-picked by Woody Allen for the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

The band has played on the same bill as Joe Cocker, Van Morrison and Dr John.

Tickets are available priced £8 (£7 concessions) from Saddleworth Museum, Uppermill Post Office or from Cliff Etherden on 01457-872 464.

THE choir is looking to increase its membership. Anyone with a reasonable voice is invited to attend rehearsals every Wednesday between 7.30 and 9.30pm at the Old School, Lee Street, Uppermill, or contact Stuart Iles on 0161-665 2596.

Nice to see some areas of Oldham have`nt forgotten it`s St George`s Day. Have just got back from Ashton where Tameside Council are giving out Red Roses outside the Town Hall. They`re not afraid of being Patriotic. Wake up Oldham Council and show how proud you all are of our history and heritage before it`s too late!!!
