Road-rage fear of armed motorist

Date published: 01 May 2009

A motorist kept a 2ft-long metal tube in his car to defend himself from road-rage drivers, Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, was told.

Gregory Torrington (40), of Moorcroft Street, Oldham, pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon after police searched his car during a routine check in Failsworth last September. He was sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid work, and told to pay £300 costs.
The judge, Mr Recorder Howard Bentham QC, told him, “You cannot carry weapons in you car, even if it is for self-defence.”

Mr Edward Moss, defending, said, “He now accepts it was a rather stupid and foolish thing to do.”

another fine example of the police targeting motorists for the easy pickings!
if the police did their jobs properly are dealt with real crime then Torrington wouldn't feel the need to carry such a weapon.
my advice is buy a steering wheel lock. they would be just as useful and they couldnt do a thing about that!

I agree with fedupoldhamer. There are numerous effective items that can be useful for self defence but which have legitimate uses in relation to the vehicle. Anybody with common-sense could have these in their car if they want. The sentence appears very draconian but there may be issues we haven't been told about. Anything can be considered as an offensive weapon but the police have to prove that was its intended use.

i see Gordon Brown as an offensive weapon (of mass destruction to britain)
can you arrest him and sentence him for crimes against britains society!

he's much more of a threat than Mr Torrington.
