Call for women to ditch burka

Date published: 24/06/2009

THE burka dress does not belong in 21st century Britain, according to an Oldham Euro MP.

Liberal Democrat Chris Davies says that he wants local Muslim women to take a lead in making clear that the wearing of the burka is “not welcome.”

Mr Davies said that politicians were slow to take action to curb forced marriages within the Muslim community, but it was time now to speak out against a dress code that “reduced women to subservience.”

The burka completely envelopes the wearer leaving only their eyes visible. President Sarkozy of France this week attacked it as an assault upon the dignity of women.

“Both sexes should be free to express their identity through the dress they wear. But in my experience, the burka acts as a mask, reducing identity.”

"If there are men who want to use the burka to impose their own will upon women in their family they should feel the full force of society's disapproval."

for once useless chris is actually right!
wearing this sort of clothing makes you feel intimidated.
especially with yesterdays report on welcoming diverse cultures. but some things should stay at their origins. they are not needed over here!
it gives the feeling that they are opressed! i can honestly say i have never ever spoken to anyone wearing one and i have many friends who are asian!

Lets face it, the liberal left have forced any discussion over race into a no go area, anyone raising this risks accusations of racism, those dealing with it accusations themselves if they do not find it so.
It's time to kill the stupidity of Political correctness, any party which says it will, will get my vote!

I think that as we live in a free society women and should be allowed to wear what they like, but they should not be driving about in cars with their veils obscuring their faces. This should be outlawed imediately because if they are involved in an accident no one would be able to give a description of the driver if they fail to stop. That is more important than anything in my opinion.

Would a person, man or woman, be allowed into a bank, for instance, wearing a balaclava with holes only for eyes? Would alarm bells be ringing and police called immediately? Yes, I think so and rightly too. How does anyone know who hides behind a burka? I think in these times of today the Burka isn’t an appropriate garment for anyone to wear in European countries.

Send it back to the middle ages where it firmly belongs, if they feel they must wear it go to a country where it is more acceptable.

If they want to wear a burka let them move to Iran etc.

Ditch the burka? It will never happen. Could you envisage a police officer having to arrest a burka wearing female,no chance. The tabloids would have a frenzy and that would be the end of someones police career. Sad but true.

My view is summed up by a comment already made. The burka is not acceptable wear for the 21st century. I would be interested to hear what the women who wear it actually think. I would assume that they are not allowed to express there opinion. It must cause all sorts of situations, not least security issues.

if a lot of people white or brown started wearing these and if you started breaking the law wearing them they would soon be banned
