Hunt for killer on the run

Date published: 30 June 2009

Police have renewed a bid to catch a convicted killer who may be living a double life in Oldham.

Abdul Salam, now 33, vanished after hiding in the back of a lorry and claiming asylum in Dover in 2002.

Belgian police later issued an international arrest warrant for him over the death of a young mother whose throat was slashed.

He was jailed for 30 years in his absence and police think he may have started a new life in a British Bangladeshi community.

Salam, also known as Rouf Uddin, comes from Sylhet where thousands of Oldham’s Bangladeshi community originate.

He also has family ties in London, and may have travelled to France, Italy, the United States, and Bangladesh. The founder of Crimestoppers, the national anti-crime charity, Lord Ashcroft, said Salam should not be given a safe haven in Britain.

He added: “Information from the public can play a vital role in helping law enforcement track him down.”

Information on 120 further suspected criminals was included on a wanted list circulated in the US, Canada, Jamaica, Holland, Australia and Belgium.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
