Clocking off!

Council calls time on innovative timepiece

One of Oldham’s less successful artworks — the pavement clock — has disappeared beneath a new garden, in time for a visit by North-West in Bloom judges.

Parks department staff are busy installing the timber baulks which will contain the soil in Market Place, in front of Spindles Town Square shopping centre.

The clock was part of a £470,000 town centre improvement in 2002, and used a series of lights to indicate the hours and minutes. But time has stood still for the clock, which has not worked for years. Now the new garden will mark the changing seasons instead.

When will OMBC learn that these so called artwork are a waste of money. This clock has now been removed and the other artwork i think is know as timewash is due to go.

another waste of money from the past being covered over with more wasteful things today. these flowers will only last a few weeks and then they'll be gone too. just like all our money we pay out in tax to ombc!

Yet again more wasted tax payers money and making a toilet of it just does not work.

Just like the flats on Shaw Rd, Higginshaw - another piece of Labour's failed legacy is landscaped. Perhaps we should parade all our failed 'luminaries' past the new garden and pass round the hat for donations from their considerable allowances. Don't be shy folks. Just hold your hands up instead of out for once!

With a little bit of effort 'The Whistling P*** stone' could be converted into a public convenience. We are short of those when taken short in the town centre. The silvery pipe things could be transformed into revolving periscopes so folk could get a panoramic view of the empty stores & watch the restoration work on the Town Hall, whilst attending to their business. The urinals could be cast as likenesses of our 'cabinet'. By Jove! that's art at work.
