Child pics allegation: teacher says computers not secure
Date published: 03/07/2009
A TEACHER arrested on suspicion of downloading indecent images of children has denied the allegations.
And Nigel Hooley claims there have been a number of incidents when computers have not been secure at South Chadderton School where he is head of maths.
The 32-year-old was suspended after the images were found on a laptop at the Butterworth Lane school on June 17.
They are believed to have been downloaded from the internet and there is no suggestion they feature pupils from the school.
Mr Hooley is also a Conservative councillor in Trafford.
His solicitor Michelle Stewart, from Manchester law firm Cuttle & Co, said: “We can confirm that the information technology department discovered some images which were held on the school computer server. Mr Hooley then attended the police station by prior appointment and was interviewed under caution.
“Mr Hooley strenuously denied the allegations and co-operated fully with the police investigation. He has given full details of a number of incidents at the school, when computers have not been secure and we understand that there has now been a review of the computer security at the school in question.
“We understand that Greater Manchester Police now has a number of avenues of investigation to pursue, including a thorough analysis of computer equipment in order to verify the source of the images. Mr Hooley is adamant that the investigation will completely exonerate him from these allegations.”
The Oldham Chronicle has been unable to contact South Chadderton School for a comment. Mr Hooley has been bailed until August 7.
Have Your Say
so someone else that had access to the computer downloaded them ? kinda scary as it was a school laptop.
The Law of this land as far as I am aware is that you are innocent until proven guilty. Apparently the local press in the Northwest disagree with this. I have children at this school & am shocked like most parents however please tell me what gives you the right to publish this mans name & photo when he has not even been charged with the offence. This teacher will never be able to teach at this school again even if he is proven innocent shame on you people of the press.
At my child's school there is a block on all such sites.
Why does this school not have the similar?
i had a similar incedant on my home computer sometime ago. i was "hijacked" by hackers and my computer was being used as remote storage for some criminal stuff including credit card data and a whole host of other stuff. luckily i nipped it in the bud before anything happened but TBH its more commonplace than you think and can carry on for YEARS without your knowledge!! lesson here is MAKE SURE YOUR PCs ARE PROPERLY PROTECTED, i learned the hard way dont get caught out yourselves!!
Once again we have trial by media, all to often lives are ruined by sensationalising journalists, i agree with ArthurD
and jantay, get all the facts before you sentence anyone to the gallows.

Why have the chron published this mans name when he has not been found guilty? Seems very unfair.
