‘Disrespectful’ youths play on memorial site
Date published: 20 July 2009
Former Shaw and Crompton parish councillor Val Pemberton says residents have been upset to see youths playing cricket and football in Shaw’s memorial garden.
Since a “No Ball Games” sign vanished, youngsters have taken advantage at the contemplative spot, off Westway. Mrs Pemberton, who said she had complained to the council but nothing had been done, added: “It’s a place of respect and I’m concerned about it.”
Councillor Mark Alcock, Cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said: “A new sign has been ordered. It should be remembered that this year Oldham Council has made a substantial investment in summer activities and it is to be hoped that local young people will take advantage of these in their local area.”
The full schedule of activities can be found at www.oldham.gov.uk/passport_to_summer_events_brochure.pdf.

It is sad that these brainless & callous people show so little respect: one wonders how they have been brought up & which schools they attended? I have seen a trouserless man in there one night; 3 wedding cars parked on the pathways for a photographer & at 4.45 this afternoon about half a dozen youths in the bushes near the library smoking drugs ......
Many of my ancestors died in both world wars, and I am certain they would not begrudge children playing games on the grass.
Val Pemberton and local residents should get a life
I agree we need to have repect BUT where do children play ?? if they play in the street they're wrong. sometimes you need to use some commen sense
It isn't children we are talking about - those playing football, smoking drugs etc are in their late teens & twenties.
i see disrespectful teenagers regularly when taking my elderly aunt to visit st thomas' church cemetery at moorside.
they play football, run all over graves laughing and shouting...its heartbreaking for my aunt to see when tending to her husband's grave.
i spoke to one chubby lad, who said he was 14,and said his dad wont let him play on the playground!
these lads need spooking, or failing that, community officers should patrol the area, take their names, and warn them off.

I think all the people wanted was more respect and more positive action from the council, not a PR sentence from an inept representative
