Latics get the land for £20m stadium

Reporter: Richard Hooton
Date online: 23 July 2009

OLDHAM Athletic’s plans to relocate to a £20 million stadium in Failsworth have moved a step closer following Oldham Council Cabinet’s decision to lease the club public land.

The land, at Lower Memorial Park and Broadway Allotments, will now be transferred to Latics to build a 12,000 seater stadium, so long as the club buys the neighbouring Lancaster Club and gets detailed planning permission.

The club has an agreement with BAE Systems to buy the Grade II listed Lancaster Club and use it for an indoor 3G pitch.

Boundary Park will be sold to a developer to build family houses, the proceeds paying for the 30-acre redevelopment of the land off Broadway.

The club says it is haemorrhaging money in a crumbling stadium and must move to become financially viable.

Its new site will also include two football pitches, a soccer dome featuring ten five-a-side pitches, a sporting rehabilitation centre and conferencing facilities.

It’s hoped the stadium will be ready for the 2011-12 season — if a buyer for Boundary Park is found.

Failsworth Dynamos Football Club had a written commitment to lease and develop the park land but Latics chiefs hope to appease them by offering use of the new facilities. Broadway Allotment holders will also be offered compensation and new plots.

Architects will now be commissioned to draw up more detailed plans with an application expected before the planning committee by the end of 2009.

what about local residents on park ave, west ave, bridport ave, broadway and the houses on fairway that all back onto the proposed site both manchester & oldham council residents that dont want a football stadium in their what was peacefull location!! surely all the above will object to any proposed stadium

where are the supposed 12,000 supporters going to park, by law the would have to provide upto 3000 car park spaces which on its own would be the size of 4 fullsize football pitches?

has anyone contacted the various highways agencys, broadway & oldham rd are gridlocked on match days when manchester city are at home, so if they are both at home the whole area would become one massive carpark, broadway isnt big enough to handle the additional traffic on match days!!

dont the council, BAE systems & oldham athletic have a moral obligation to look after all the existing sports club, teams that will be thrown off the lancaster club to accomadate Oldham athletic new proposal all i keep being told is that oldham will accomodate all the teams that play there how they are going to do that i would love to know

The simple facts are 3 bowling greens,2 tennis courts,1 basketball court,1 childrens park,3 full size football pitches,1 sports and social club that has over 600 members, 1 cricket pitch, a nature reserve in moston brook (which will be affected)will all be lost. what will the area gain, a football stadium with the additional traffic & pollution, additional noise and match day litter and travelling supporters. Sounds a good deal to the local community what a joke!!

well done Oldham Council...sensible idea offered a sensible solution. The original B-Park plan was ridiculous and would have resulted in a right mess.

famousfuller, get your helper to re-read, the club are willing to help the football clubs out. Latics will be buying the land from BAE, these other clubs do not own the land so they will have to relocate. The area is a dump with businesses closing all over, think of all the money it will generate.

well here we go again more of failsworths life bites the dust you councillors want shootig you are a loud of crap

sounds like its been a done deal for some time. i just hope for latics they get what ombc promise! roughyheads where let down and are still they're waiting for their stadium!
this could be good for them but time after time ombc fail to deliver what they promise! this will sound the death knell for them! it wont be accrington stanley! "it'll be oldham athletic? who are they?"

Not in my back yard crew strikes again, wonder if you actually supported the BP regeneration bid? Doubt it as I bet ur a plastic city/utd fan. The people of this town need to stop moaning about its faults and actually contribute to improving it (and not just by its links to the city down the road)

Perhaps all the want to be manc who live in the Oldham borough, should move down the road to the lovely Newton Heath or delightful Moston. You'd be far away from all the redevlopment of what is a dump of an area. Look at what Citys ground has done for that area.

Oldham Latics, or is Failsworth Latics or Manchester Latics.......

Yes the Stadium may be "shot", what on earth has happened to the proposed new build that was supposed to be in Chadderton Central?

It is so much easier to take from people what they had the use of, and give it someone else! Well done Lib Dem's

famousfuller, get off your soapbox you NIMBY, Man Utd certainly hasn't got 17,000+ carparl spaces so clearly there is not a legal obligation to provide parking spaces.

Traffic surveys wer carried out as part of the orginal planning application and the council / club have offered to replace the leisure space luddite.

Good for the latics, was upset by the move at first but this is the future. The people of failsworth who dont support the move should wake up, the place is a dump and this is the only investment that will ever reach the area. If they cant see any benefits here they must be mad. OAFC till I die.

OMG - these negative comments are just getting more and more ridiculous - its 2009 NOT 1909. What is wrong with you people?? If you want to live in the dark ages then go ahead and do so but stop trying to drag down what is a fantastic opportunity - start thinking outside the box for once!

The highways agency's don't give a toss
That is why they allowed Elk Mill Trading Estate to be built and extended.
The whole area comes to a standstill every weekend, never mind match days

arthur D you have shown your inteligence, if you would like to go and look at the site its a grade 11 period building, with excellant sports facilities, that will be a massive loss to the local community i think you must have be watching oldham on ice station zero to long and its frozen your brain(if you had one in the first place).

arthur d i take it you think you live in a more exclusive area of the country?? if so would you please contact oldham council and explain why your area is more suited to have a prestigous development like the new stadium in your area and leave us to slum it out cheers!!! you are so narrow minded

This will be the pinch me ground if ever it comes to light.I will bet next years C/Tax that it won`t

Many Muppets........One Council

Fair point famousfuller, your helper typed that very well. I have used the excellent (spelt ent) sports facilities quite few times and its very nice indeed, but they will be replaced by newer, bigger and better. That is the only nice spot in what is a dying area. The new ground will bring lots of money and redevelopment. I bet people are buying pubs and shops as we speak in anticipation.

Latics couldn't afford the land were I live. Nice areas don't need regeneration.

Oldham as a town should be ashamed of itself.New stadia have been built all over the uk in the last 20 years. Here we are, having missed the boat financially with the bp plan, clutching at straws. They must have google mapped for a peice of green land in the OMBC boundary with some vague tranport links to it.This failsworth plan is so ludicrous it just about sums this town up.

Why do we need a new stadium, 4 miles away from where it should be... i cant stand football, please just compensate all oldham fans, with a £1000 each to go support a proper team!!!!. plus our house will devalue 10 or more thousand pounds, thanks ever so much... would i be able to put a burger van outside the chairmans house? i didnt think so..

what about the greyhound

After all that fighting for the planning permission at the old ground, do they not think they'll have an equal problem here?
The allotments, play areas and football pitches are valuable local facilities. What sort of idiot council gives these up?
Let Latics put their money where their mouth is, else this scheme will just be more broken promises for local residents.

have a look at these plans submitted in march 08 just a little over a year ago
http://www.oldham.gov.uk/moston_brook_masterplansmall.pdf

what a difference a year makes!!! money involved morals changed oldham council make me laugh
