Kill your speed, save lives pledge

Date published: 06 August 2009

OLDHAM Mayor Councillor Jim McArdle signed a pledge encouraging residents to kill their speed.

Oldham Road Safety Officers set up a stall in Spindles Shopping Centre to give shoppers advice and collect information about their road safety habits.

The Mayor signed a pledge and encouraged residents to join him in promising to watch their speed between the hours of 3pm and 7pm — the time when most accidents happen.

A large television screen in the shopping centre showed some of the areas around the borough that have the highest rate of road accidents.

Oldham Council has received extra funding from the Department of Transport to help improve road safety awareness in the borough’s adult residents.

The officers will also visit other groups across the town to share tips on how to stay safe on the roads along with advice for drivers.

What a load of old pap! Excess speed is involved in hardly any accidents, yet because they can make money from it we're led to believe that it does. When is some action going to be taken about the motorcyclists screaming down paths with no helmets, insurance, licence etc etc. When there's action on all fronts then there will be some credibility to this policy veneer

You are spot on Flake. Government figures reveal that only 3% of accidents are caused by speeding. Four of the five most frequently reported contributory factors in accidents involved driver or rider error or reaction. Speed is easy to blame because it only depends on one factor and is easy to prosecute with cameras etc. It is a good money spinner. Please ignore my strap-line for this post!

As can be seen by the two first comments, the car lobby whingers and whiners are at it again with the "money spinner" lie. If they wanted to make money there would be A LOT MORE cameras catching the millions who daily drive at whatever speed they want generating millions. At 30mph, 80% of people hit by a car survive. At 40mph, 80% die. It's 30 for a reason. But that won't stop incessant whiners will it?.

Why watch your speed between 3pm and 7pm? You should be watching it all the time. Btw Mr McArdle, you should watch for double yellow lines too, putting on your hazard lights doesn't make you immune to them when you wants some chips.

Hello Stockfield rd/Hunt lane 5 accidents 3rd Feb 2009 nothing ever done about speeding/phone using HGV`s after 112 complaints. Its a photo oppo and trying to justify more recycled rubbish!
