Hooray for Hollinwood — but agency not happy

PRANKSTERS who erected their very own Hollinwood sign — aping the famous sign above Hollywood — on the M60 motorway embankment have been slammed by the Highways Agency.
The 8ft high white letters spelling out Hollinwood appeared on Sunday night close to the southbound slip road at Junction 22.
Agency officers took down the letters yesterday — and have warned against similar stunts.
They have not found the culprits who put the letters up but said prosecution could be an option.
A spokesman said: “It is illegal to trespass on the motorway and that includes the embankment.
“It is incredibly dangerous and if they would have slipped and fallen onto the carriageway, the consequences don’t bear thinking about.
“The letters are also a distraction to motorists.
“It might have seemed like a jolly jape but it has potentially serious consequences.
“We are asking people to stay well away from the motorway.”

It’s about time the area was brightened up a bit! What could be more fitting than a HOLLYWOOD type sign near to the site of the old Roxy.
A typical response from the power drunk Highways Agency.
They need to take a ride down the M6 through Cheshire were there are old trailers parked at the side of the motorway covered in advertising which are far far worse distraction's than a a one word sign next to the M60.
Why don't the HA concentrate on the state of this section of motorway!!
Nine years old and already being replaced????
The owners/directors of the company who caused this problem with cheap quality materials and workmanship will more than likely get off without any action taken.
H&S regulations come out on top again.
the fun police have been at it again! they dont like others having some fun.
so you wont be able to do anything for fear of causing offence or a slight hazard.
They was talking about this on real radio this morning. BLOODY KILLJOYS FOR TAKING THE SIGN DOWN.
Hmmm! One wonders whether removal of the sign would have been as swift if it had said 'BOLLYWOOD'
That said, Hollinwood, after Hibbert, who now thinks things are becoming wonderful again under Labour, - really - could do with brightening up. Considering it is now a desert, perhaps a neon sign saying SAHARA would be more apt.
lets hope they were healthy and safe by wearing hi-visabilty jackets also i thought there was a plan to put something like that up spoil sports
What a set of boring, miserable, jobsworths.
What about all the trailers we see in fields and the fancy rotating signs we see at busy road junctions.
Full marks to the people who brought a smile to a lot of people.
I have to agree with johnnye98. Is this sign more distracting than the M60 itself, with seemingly permanent repairs and so badly designed that it floods regularly?
its pathetic that they say the are going to prosecute for a stunt that has created something positive for oldham, its gained good publicity. Distractions are only caused by careless drivers, i dont think we are all that stupid to be that distracted.
AGH - You are pathetic
