Young give estate a clean sweep

Date published: 18/08/2009

FITTON Hill is sparkling after a two-day spruce up at the hands of a band of young people intent on making a difference.

Around 60 volunteers turned out to tackle tasks ranging from grass cutting and litter picking to fitting hanging baskets.

The event was a joint project between volunteers from the Salvation Army Eden project, based at Fitton Hill, and the Audacious Summer Youth Festival.

The Manchester festival encouraged young people to work on community projects in what organisers were calling 10,000 Hours of Hope.

Fitton Hill was split into five areas, with teams tackling unsightly spots in the skatepark, around the Youth Inclusion Project, and outside the Fitton Arms, fitting hanging baskets for residents in The Spur, and painting railings in Dowry Street.

Eden project volunteer Stephen Rimmer (21) said: “It was great to see so many young people joining in and doing something worthwhile with their time.

“It was tiring, but well worth it to see the results.”

praise where praise is due. question: why do estates and other places keep getting into such a mess? lack of education me thinks. children should be taught not to throw rubbish on the streets. if they aren't told, they carry on into adulthood.
many of today's parents are nothing more than children themselves...so what can we expect? its a sad state of affairs :o(
