Book closes on Broadway library
Reporter: Karen Doherty
Date online: 15 September 2009
BROADWAY Library is reduced to a pile of rubble as the bulldozers move in.
The work marks the final chapter in the history of the building which opened in 1954 to celebrate the Queen’s coronation.
It closed in May as part of budget cuts, despite a campaign to save it.
The council believes the cleared site will be more attractive to developers.

Nice to see the liberals listening to the public, we will remember next time you are voted out
a sad day when a perfectly good community facility is shut down and rushed through to clear the way for lining ombc's pockets. anyone in the local area should now be entitled to a council tax rebate.
but then i bet they'll be no chance of that!
The annoying thing is that it has been reported that a developer was interested in the building. But his proposals were not allowed to be given proper consideration.
Too much rush to save money, for spending in other areas ofn the borough, at Chadderton's expense.
Amazing how the amoebas in the council swamp can close & demolish this building in about seven minutes flat. To prevent it becoming an eyesore, they say. Hidden agenda, we say. The Old Town Hall, on show in our town centre, has been allowed to rot away for years & the clueless space wasters haven't the slightest glimmer of a plan to deal with it. This has truly got to be the worst bunch of know nowts ever to have infested the council chamber! The clock moves on! Tick-tock. Tick-tock!
Well dome oldham council, another quick buck was it.

I'll offer £9000 for it. I will then build something without full planing permission and then ask for millions of pounds of membership fees from the local residents!!!!!!!
