Stolen car crash man dies

Date published: 22 September 2009

A MAN who was left fighting for his life when a stolen car ploughed into a lamp-post has died.

The 20-year-old was seriously injured in the smash on Oldham Road, Denshaw, in the early hours of Sunday.

He was placed on life-support at Tameside General Hospital but died yesterday.

A police officer on routine patrol spotted the stolen Nissan Micra in Ripponden Road, Denshaw, at about 2.10am.

It did a U-turn, sped off and crashed opposite the Printer’s Arms car park.

Two people were cut free from the car which flipped on to its side on the pavement.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of burglary while a 17-year-old boy remains in hospital with a broken leg.

The police officer has been taken off driving duties while the Independent Police Complaints Commission reviews the incident.

Witnesses should contact the police on 0161-872 5050.

There will be a few Oldham Magistrates who will now wish they had given this youth a chance in life by giving him a proper prison term when he deserved it. He has cost the town thousands.

If he had not stolen the car and stopped for the police then he'd be alive today. Another police officer taken of driving duties, we can ill afford this, it's not his fault that this terrible incident occurred. My thoughts go to the dead mans family....

He was called Matthew Fricker and, from reports, he was a particularly unpleasant person.

none of you obviously didnt know this man. so dont judge a book by its cover. everyone makes mistakes! he will be sadly missed ! u should have some respect !

Why Jade? He had no respect for others whose lives he put at risk.

Jade, don't judge a book by its cover?

From reading the press eports, the evidence inside the book is actually quite compelling!

I mean, why else would someone have an ASBO and have been given a total of 8 absolute discharges by Oldham Magistrates Court?
