Warren’s Tory conference stand

OUTSPOKEN Failsworth firebrand Warren Bates claims he was the driving force behind Tory plans to keep free bus passes for the over-60s.

The 69-year-old heard a rumour that the Conservatives were thinking about axing the pass which gives pensioners free travel.

So rather than sit at home and complain, Warren hot-footed it to Manchester Central (formerly the G-Mex) where the Tory Party conference is being held, to air his views.

He said: “I just stood outside and spoke to delegates, MPs and journalists on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. They were all very kind and listened to what I had to say.

“Yesterday, I heard that the party had announced on the BBC that bus passes for the over-60s were safe — I think I played a huge part in that announcement.

“I think my lobbying encouraged the party to confirm their future plans for the passes.

“I did my bit — there’s no point sitting moaning about something if you’re not going to do anything about it.

“I let Jeremy Paxman under my umbrella as it was pouring with rain. I told him his interviewing style had gone soft — but he was very nice to me.

“I think the Tory Party has really changed.

“All the delegates showed me a lot of warmth, kindness and understanding as I made my protest outside the conference.”

Mr Bates, who was banned from attending Failsworth Area Committees in March because of his outspoken views, plans to attend the conference for the rest of the week.
