Crash drivers are ‘walking wounded’
Date published: 08 October 2009
MOTORISTS had a lucky escape after two cars collided near an accident blackspot.
A silver Mondeo and blue Fiesta were left badly smashed after the crash in Lees Road, at the junction of Clarksfield Street, Clarksfield, at 6.20 this morning.
Police said the drivers were not badly injured and described them as “walking wounded.”
The road was temporarily blocked as highways officers were called to clear away the debris.
The road has already been the scene of several recent accidents and the crash happened near to the scene of a fatal collision. Chris Dale (15), a talented Blue Coat School pupil, died when he was in collision with a Mini Cooper as he crossed Lees Road in June.
In 2003, 16-year-old school friends Christian Leyden, of Springhead, and Anthony Hughes, of Greenfield, were killed when a speeding car failed to stop at the Wellyhole Road junction and struck the car Anthony’s mother was driving.
And last month a black VW car shot out of Wellyhole Street, leaving skid marks, before hitting the kerb in Lees Road, and plunging into bushes. Two men were trapped inside but both managed to escape and ran off.
It prompted Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas to write to Oldham Council calling for improved safety measures.
He wants something implemented to warn drivers of the junction when driving down Wellyhole Street.

I have given up abiding by the rules no else does, even this morning a bus drove out of new earth street through a red light on to roundthorn road. And taxis well I believe the majority have never passed any test.
accident blackspot? where? if roads are classed like this because of every accident everywhere would be as bad.
in the majority of cases it was the speed of the driver that caused the accident.
although the layout of the road lower down at leesbrook is also to blame.
its too wide with no regular islands to wait safely as traffic passes.
This junction is 100 metres or more away from the other accidents mentioned in this report so why bring them into it ? This is a crossroads and like any other junction, if drivers are discourteous or ignorant of priorities, or just bad drivers, collisions will occur.
Yes Flake, bad drivers do go thru red TLs and do a lot more dangerous things than they used to. We good drivers just have to be prepared for them and stay vigilant cos there just aren't enough police around to stop them (and they know it)
maybe if oldham council provided decent road layouts instead of the idiotic ones they have then drivers might not be as idiotic?
i know that it can be frustrating out there driving on oldhams roads and im a calm person. anyone with a short fuse will resort to all sorts of dangerous things.
Have Your Say

Driving standards in Oldham appear to be well below average. I've seen drivers blatently go through a series of red traffic lights, not because they were wanting to go fast, I caught them up later, but seemingly because they are unaware of the meaning of road signals.
Marking roads better won't solve this only driver training will.
