Police heavy-handed, say arrested protesters
Date published: 15 October 2009
AN Oldham man who was arrested during the weekend’s English Defence League protest in Manchester has accused police of being heavy-handed.
William Crangle (30) claimed in court that he and his friend, Kevin Greaves, were the victims of abuse.
“The police picked on us because of the way we looked. They were heavy-handed,” he said.
But Crangle, of North Croft, and Greaves (30), of Springwood Hall Road, both Oldham, admitted using threatening words and behaviour.
Crangle was fined £160 and Greaves £85. Each was ordered to pay £85 costs.
Mr Gareth Brandon, prosecuting, said Crangle swore at officers after being asked to remove a bandana that was partly covering his face.
Greaves reacted in a similar manner when told he was going to be searched. Both men were arrested after they refused to behave.
In court, Greaves apologised for his behaviour and was ordered to pay a further £300 for a second breach of an order binding him to keep the peace.

So covering the face is an offence? Or is it? I am confused.
Timberwolf, next time you get a minute have a look at SECTION 60AA CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND PUBLIC ORDER ACT 1994
Fedup: Well done GMP indeed, These 2 herberts plus many more prevented from causing chaos by firm Policing.
heavy-handed? You expect to shout foul abuse at other people and then when they ask you to conform you say they were "heavy-handed"! How stupid do you really need to be and some of the stories that are reported on here are a joke.
Not if the TV pics of muslins/UAF are anything to go by.
It will be interesting to see what happens the next time any of the minority groups go on to the streets to protest .!!! We will all be watching very carefully to see how many end up in court for swearing and having their faces covered .JOKE EH.
He wouldnt remove his bandana hey,,,,lots of people walk round Oldham every day with all of their faces covered,,same law for all??
What right have the police to ask this man to remove his bandana?
What about the people who shouted at our returning troops - they covered their faces and were not asked to remove their coverings?
Again - two laws running in this country.
Mrs C - spreading myths again!!! I saw the TV pictures of the people shouting abuse, faces weren't covered -tut tut.
Webi - If all you are doing is walking around town, cover your face it doesn't bother me...but if you are intent on causing trouble then, I welcome the Police telling you to uncover your face to identify you.
Linda - Joke will be you listening to it on televesion and picking out individuals swearing...I'll be waiting for that
timberwolf - easily done I take it!!
Have Your Say

having seen quite a few video's on new channels and online sites i can see that the EDL where provoked by the police as usual. they where shunted into an alleyway and stopped from actually getting into the gardens.
the UAF didnt seem to have any trouble getting there.
might have been a completely different story if it was the other way around. well done GMP, its played nicely into the UDL's hands!
