Metrolink work on track at Mumps

Date published: 30 October 2009

IT’S out with the old and in with the new as Oldham’s railway line is ripped up to be replaced by tram tracks at Mumps.

Work is well under way in converting the Oldham loop line to finally bring Metrolink to the borough.

It was the end of an era at the beginning of October when the last train rumbled along the line after more than 140 years of railway services. But it will be a long wait for the trams as it will take two years to replace the 12-mile long line.

Commuters are having to rely on express buses in the meantime, with trams expected to begin running to Oldham Mumps in autumn 2011, and Rochdale in spring 2012.

Express buses!

You've got to laugh, haven't you?

'Work is well under way..' To RE-lay 12 miles in two years? Average 6 mls per yr. Between 1863 & 1869 Union Pacific & Central Pacific Railroads LAID 1756 miles of track between Sacramento & Council Bluffs, Iowa. Avge 293 mls per yr. In 2 yrs 586mls. At Metrolink speeds it would have taken the RR's 293 yrs to complete the line. It wouldn't have been finished until the yr 2156, by then no-one would want it. A nice symmetry eh? Why don't we re-name Mumps, Council Bluffs?
